The name — Hinoki and the Bird — refers to wood from the Japanese cypress tree known for strength and durability, as well as its spicy lemon scent from which an essential oil is derived. Certainly, for the Bird, or any bird for that matter, a tree like this would be a nice place to spend some time. As a restaurant and event space, Hinoki and the Bird is just as perfect a landing place.
The large, airy indoor-outdoor space designed by the architect Milo Garcia makes its nest in the heart of Century City, centrally located to Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and downtown Los Angeles.
The menu takes its cues from the culinary team’s global travels and of course, there is the restaurant’s specialty dish of a Hinoki smoked cod!
At a recent event on the patio, which accommodates 120 for a seated dinner and 200 for a cocktail reception, the afternoon sun created as dappled effect before the glow of candles on the tables and in an architectural central wall took over. The feeling you get is that you could be anywhere. And, if you rented the entire space, you could be anywhere with 300 of your closes friends for a cocktail reception, or 180 for a seated dinner. I know because a little bird told me.
