Designer’s Notebook: Forces of Nature – Sealed With a Kiss

“This is one of those events that simply gives me endless amounts of inspiration. I am thrilled to see event designers using design elements to create such an unbelievable transformation. Transformations like these truly set the bar for innovative thinking and creative expertise.” – David Merrell

Forces of Nature is a truly amazing event unique to Pittsburgh. This year’s “Forces of Nature: Color Our World” featured five local event designers, and The Event Group team was honored to be invited to participate in the event, which benefits Event Pros Take Action. Each designer was given a color, around which to focus their design to be staged and displayed in a previously raw 24′ x 24′ space.  The Event Group team was given the color red and instantly they knew they wanted to create a warm, luscious and romantic atmosphere for their guests. After all it is common knowledge that red is the color of desire, romance and most importantly, love! After a few hours of brainstorming, the idea of creating an interactive love letter resonated with the entire team and “Sealed With A Kiss” quickly came to life.

The goal of this design was to fully immerse guests in a rendition of the modern day love letter.  The design team wanted to saturate guests, not only in the color red, but in the drama and pageantry of a hand-written letter.  Red is an extremely bold color, so the designer’s know they wanted to keep the details very clean, yet elegant and polished. Using trussing the team constructed the space and draped the ceiling and three walls of the area with red lamour fabric.  The concrete floor in the existing space was staunch and cold, so a transformative covering was essential; The Event Group chose dark, wood-like flooring to compliment the draping without overshadowing the design. The wood-like panels instantly added depth to the space, setting a rich tone for the showcase. To enhance the room’s ambiance, the team brought in antique mirrored tables with champagne gold accents. The mirrored tabletops reflected the warm lighting and red draping, while also serving as the base for champagne, delicious hors d’oeuvres and lush floral arrangements. Finishing touches included floral draping cuffs, a textured floral chandelier and a full-size red mailbox, embellished with red floral accents.

As guests moved into the red space, they were attracted by the striking antique mirrored tables offering elegant twists on exotic and traditional bites, all inspired by the color red and many displayed on glass-covered love letters. After indulging in a gold-rimmed glass of champagne, guests were invited to hand select one of five pre-printed love letters to personalize their selection, with the design team’s talented on-site calligrapher. After closing their letter with a classic wax seal (imprinted with red lips), guests dropped their love letters in the floral embellished  “Love” mailbox, assisted by a handsome gentleman in a black tuxedo.  A lavish dessert table served as the sweet and final touch for the Forces of Nature: Color Our World “Sealed With A Kiss” experience.

The team at The Event Group loved working on this event from start to finish. It was a great experience collaborating with talented vendors to create this modern love story concept. As Sheila Weiner of The Event Group said, “Love letters are the quintessential declaration of affection, and it was an honor to bring this old-fashioned concept to life.”
